Position and sequences 1...938(938 aa) Gene Name/synonym traG -
Organism Plasmid F Cluster 7 genes
Product F-type conjugal transfer protein TraG
1stcategory F-T4SS 2ndcategory TraG-like-F Family
3rdcategory Conjugation
Function Component of the conjugative T4SS trb/tra required for the transfer of plasmid F among E. coli cells, from donor cells to recipients. The TraG is required for two stages of the conjugation process: pilus biosynthesis and mating pair stabilization (Mps). TraG is a polytopic inner-membrane protein with a large C-terminal periplasmic domain that is required for piliation and Mps, whereas the N-terminal region is sufficient for pilus synthesis. The third function of TraG is of entry exclusion (Eex) through interaction with TraS in the recipient cell.
Miscellaneus The C-terminal region of TraG is thought to be cleaved by the host signal peptidase I to give a fragment called TraG* that is responsible for Mps.
