Function | Component of the T4SS VirB/D4 required for the translocation of the virulence factors (VirE2, VirF and the VirD2-T-DNA complex) to plant cells. VirB9 is a component of an outer-membrane-associated channel complex of the T4SS VirB/D4, in wich distinct structural domains contribute to substrate selection and translocation, establishment of channel subunit contacts, and T-pilus biogenesis. VirB7 and VirB9 form a keystone interaction essential for assembly of the apparatus into a functioning secretion system. |
Miscellaneus | VirB7 interacts with and stabilizes VirB9, and formation of the VirB7-VirB9 heterodimer, which in turn, stabilizes other type IV components. The structure of the VirB7-VirB9 interaction provides the basis for a rational approach to the disruption of this interaction in other bacterial system. Small molecules targeted against this interaction may be useful drugs to combat human infectious diseases where T4S plays a crucial role.
