Organism Rickettsia bellii OSU 85-389 Cluster 5 genes
Product Type IV secretion system protein VirB6-3 homolog
1stcategory P-T4SS 2ndcategory VirB6/TrbL Family
3rdcategory Probable effector translocator
Function Is possible that Rickettsiales vir homolog B6 (RvhB6) proteins play a role in DNA import/export, with the various duplications forming multiple diverse channels that maximize the potential for LGT in environments with high rates of congener contact. Given that VirB6 in A. tumefaciens has been demonstrated previously to facilitate substrate transfer yet is not a component of the core P-T4SS channel, the multiple RvhB6 proteins may equip Rickettsiales with substrate selectivity in the various host environments encountered by these obligate intracellular bacteria.
Miscellaneus An five copies of the virB6 gene (virB6a-e) are found in most Rickettsia genomes, with exception to R. massiliae, which is missing virB6e. Additionally, virB6d is split in the R. bellii str. OSU 85 389 genome. These virB6 genes are the most variable components of the Rickettsia vir system, particularly when the regions flanking the VirB6/TrbL domains are considered.
