Function Component of the conjugative T4SS trb/tra required for the transfer of plasmid F among E. coli cells, from donor cells to recipients. The TraQ is required for efficient processing of propilin, was identified as necessary for pilin maturation. The TraQ is an inner membrane protein whose C-terminal segment is likely to interact with TraA. As TraQ is the only Tra protein required for the accumulation of inner membrane F-pilin, the interaction probably reflects a specific, chaperone-like function for TraQ in E. coli.
Miscellaneus F derivatives defective only in traQ expression are extremely transfer deficient and are unable to synthesize detectable quantities of F pilin or to elaborate F pili.
