ORF information
ORF ID TF01742 (frame 1) Gene ID AAA98088
Position and sequences 1...330(330 aa) Gene Name/synonym traU -
Organism Plasmid F Cluster 10 genes
Product Conjugal transfer protein TraU
1stcategory F-T4SS 2ndcategory TraU-F Family
3rdcategory Conjugation
Function Component of the conjugative T4SS trb/tra required for the transfer of plasmid F among E. coli cells, from donor cells to recipients. The TraU is essential for F-pilus assembly. But TraU appears to be more essential for DNA transfer than for the elaboration of F-pilus filaments.
Miscellaneus TraU is part of a periplasmic complex containing other proteins encoded by the F tra region, since the traF, traH, and trbB products also appear to be periplasmic proteins. The several hydrophobic amino acid segments in TraU might also sustain TraU association with host- or F-encoded membrane components.
